Diagnostics
in any profession relates to the same thing, finding the cause
of a fault, this fault can be a hard permanent fault, for
example a broken pipe which is leaking water would lead to
an obvious diagnosis. An occasional misfire that occurs in
a specific temperature range and at a specific point in the
rev range therefore can be a slight harder to pinpoint….therefore
dedicated diagnostic techniques are a must
in a modern garage
The mechanical fault can at times be difficult to diagnose
but mechanically when it breaks it stays broken, you just
need to find the break.
Electronic vehicle diagnostics is a more specialised subject,
we all use “code readers” which allow us to access
the PCM (power train control module) of whichever vehicle
system the fault occurred in. modern vehicles can have up
to twenty control modules controlling every aspect of your
vehicles operating systems from obvious systems such as engine
management, anti-lock brakes and airbag to more diverse control
units like radio and entertainment, climate control and can
area network systems.

CODE READING; this allows faults that have been
recognised and recorded by the control unit to be
accessed and read, we would then clear these faults
and road test a vehicle to see which faults, if
any, return.

LIVE DATA; allows our technicians access to all
aspects of the electronic components and systems
that the PCM monitors(air intake, fuel amounts ,temperatures
etc)after the code reading has pointed to the direction
of the fault live data allows us to check for discrepancies
in the output of certain sensors and systems to
pinpoint the fault.

FURTHER TESTING; once we have been given a direction
and pinpointed an area we then have to test the
component which is deemed to be faulty, we can go
about this in several ways, generally by the use
of oscilloscopes, vacuum pumps, multimetres etc.
After clarification of component failure we can
replace or repair the component, after this we code
read and scan live data again to ascertain that
the original fault has been eradicated.
